A Saturday Stroll down Harrison Avenue

New Orleans is full of well-known streets: Bourbon, Magazine, Frenchmen, Tchoupoutalis.  It is time to discover those not so famous streets that also offer a lot of fun and entertainment. My personal favorite is Harrison Avenue (ok, so it's an avenue).  It continues to thrive and new businesses continue to pop up frequently.  So let's take a stroll down the avenue and discover all that it has to offer.  Disclaimer: this is just a FEW of all the great businesses- there are so many I could not include them all but I hope you discover all your favorites too!

Closed on Sundays

My personal favorite on the block, Mondo owned by chef Susan Spicer.  The menu is diverse and always changing and I've never tasted anything that isn't delicious.  They serve my favorite burger in town,The Mondo Burger (medium rare, add mushrooms and greyuere). Mondo also has yummy pizzas that they cook on their wood fired oven  Tuesdays is 1/2 off ALL bottles of wine so get in there!

El Gato Negro

Open 7 days a week

If you haven't gone to their newly renovated restaurant, be sure to check it out.  The outdoor patio is lovely and the "outdoor" bar (enclosed in glass) serves happy hour 4pm-6pm- $5 Margaritas.  They serve my favorite guacomole by far and it is made fresh at your table.

The Steak Knife

Closed Sundays and Mondays

The Steak Knife's menu never changes and it doesn't need to.  I love a great piece of medium rare meat and their steaks can compete with any steakhouse around town (trust me, I frequent a lot of them).  Their bar scene is always hopping throughout the week as well.  You may want to call for reservations on the weekends because they do get busy.

Velvet Cactus

Another great choice if you are in the mood for Mexican or just a nice atmosphere.  Another lovely patio with a fountain and decorative lighting.  They have great happy hour specials as well.  They do host one of the best Cinco de Mayo parties in the city so check it out this year!

Footprints to Fitness at Gernon Brown

My favorite fitness instructor, April Dupre holds fitness fusion classes at Gernon Brown (corner of Harrison and Marconi) on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Barre, weight training, cardio, pilates, and yoga all in one hour- first class is always free so what are you waiting for?  She always hosts fun events around town from FREE yogalates at Duncan Plaza to workouts at downtown hotels.  Follow Footprints to Fitness on Facebook and Instagram to stay informed- treat ya self!

Cinco de Mayo

The Velvet Cactus has one of the biggest (and best) Cinco de Mayo events in New Orleans.  It is an all day affair with margaritas and bands, including Da Hound and Where Y'acht.  It is always a huge celebration and lots of fun.  You can find more information on the Velvet Cactus Facebook page.  Cover charge of $5 starts at 5pm .

Harrison Market

The Harrison Marketplace takes place the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 5:30pm-8pm.  It is located in the Lakeview Grocery parking lot.  There is always a great band as well as food/drink vendors, and arts and crafts for sale.  It is a fun kid-friendly event for the community and a great place to hang out with friends and family.

Harrison Stroll

Saturday June 2nd at 5pm . ADULT only event so leave the kiddies at home and enjoy a night of grown up conversation and activities.  For $8 a wristband (rate before May 6th) you have access to all the freebies and specials along Harrison avenue provided by the shops and restaurants.
